411 for Elders in Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County is a great place for older adults, especially if you know how to access the many resources that are available.

Welcome!

Welcome to the 411 for elders in Contra Costa County, a website inspired by my colleagues in Contra Costa County’s Advisory Council on Aging (ACOA).

Our vision was to make life easier and more enjoyable for older adults and their supporter by organizing resources from trusted, local, non-profit organizations in a user-friendly format. Check out the resources on the following pages…

Advocacy

Older adults and their families have awesome advocates in their corner. The needs of older adults keep increasing with time, but resources aren’t keeping up. All of us have the power to help and advocate.

Health & Nutrition

Health and nutrition go hand in hand. As we age, our diet, exercise, socialization, and mental health needs change. There are local resources that can fill the gaps, support those who need help, and keep older adults up to date.

Safety

Safety first. As older adults become more vulnerable, their safety concerns expand. Fall prevention, elder abuse prevention, emergency preparedness, and neighborhood awareness take on greater importance.

Housing

Appropriate housing is essential to maintaining quality of life for older adults. In Contra Costa County, however, providing affordable housing is an urgent and real need. Nearly 13,000 people aged 62+ are on a waiting list.

Technology

Whether it’s shopping, connecting with a health care professional, getting from here to there, or staying in touch with loved ones, technology is an increasingly important tool for staying informed and independent in the modern world.

Transportation

Public transportation within Contra Costa County and across East Bay Counties is critically necessary but sadly lacking for older adults, especially if they lose the ability to drive safely or struggle with mobility.

Learning & Leisure

Let’s have some fun! Lifelong learning and leisure activities have positive effects on older adults, such as increasing happiness, satisfaction, creativity, personal growth, and may even improve longevity.

Caregiver Support

Family members who provide care to their elderly relatives have specific needs including respite services, resource information, counseling, assistive living devices, and networking.
Caregivers, you are not alone.

About this website

CoCoElders411.net was the brainchild of some of the most dynamic folks at ACOA. Their vision was to make life easier and more enjoyable for older adults and their supporters by organizing resources from trusted, local, non-profit organizations in a user-friendly format.

Unfortunately, ACOA’s county host site had too many restrictions that are incumbent on government agencies that would make this website way less useful, so I created an unaffiliated one as a public service.

We’re all in this together. We all have older adults who are dear to us. This website is dedicated to my parents.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that older adults in Contra Costa County have heroes who work tirelessly on their behalf. I need to take a moment to recognize the giants among us (listed in alphabetical order): Caitlin Sly, Debbie Toth, Jim Donnelly, Kevin Donovan, Steve Lipson, and Tracy Murray.

You can help too. You’ll find an invitation to submit information about local, non-profit resources. There’s another link on each page for comments, too.
